Postdoctoral Training
Postdoctoral Residency in Clinical Neuropsychology
A Houston Conference–compliant training program in lifespan neuropsychological evaluation and leading to additional certification in behavioral sleep medicine.
Postdoctoral Residency in Clinical Neuropsychology
Savannah Neuropsychology offers a two-year postdoctoral residency in clinical neuropsychology with a concentration in behavioral sleep medicine. The program is designed to meet the training requirements outlined by the Houston Conference on Specialty Education and Training in Clinical Neuropsychology (1998) as well as the Board of Behavioral Sleep Medicine.
Houston Conference (1998)
Houston Conference Training Model
Our program adheres to the Houston Conference guidelines, which define the specialty of clinical neuropsychology and establish standards for postdoctoral training. Residents develop competency across six core domains.
Generic Psychology Core
Foundations in biological, cognitive-affective, social, and individual bases of behavior; research methodology and statistics; history and systems of psychology; and ethical and professional standards.
Generic Clinical Core
Assessment, intervention, consultation, supervision, and evaluation skills applicable across clinical populations and settings.
Foundations of Clinical Neuropsychology
Advanced knowledge of functional neuroanatomy, neuropathology, neuroimaging, psychopharmacology, and neuroscience as applied to clinical practice.
Neuropsychological Assessment
Competency in the selection, administration, scoring, and interpretation of neuropsychological tests across cognitive domains including attention, memory, language, visuospatial abilities, and executive functioning.
Neuropsychological Intervention
Evidence-based interventions including cognitive rehabilitation, psychotherapy for neurological populations, and behavioral sleep medicine (CBT-I).
Professional Issues & Scholarly Activity
Ethics, supervision, consultation, and engagement in scholarly activity such as case presentations, literature review, and contributions to the field.
Training Activities
Neuropsychological Evaluations
Residents conduct comprehensive neuropsychological evaluations under close supervision, including clinical interviews, test administration, integrated report writing, and feedback sessions with patients and families.
Behavioral Sleep Medicine
Residents receive specialized training in the assessment and treatment of insomnia and other sleep disorders using CBT-I and related evidence-based protocols.
Supervision
At least two hours of individual, face-to-face supervision per week with a Board-Certified Neuropsychologist. Behavioral Sleep Medicine is an ongoing rotation in which a licensed psychologist with a Diplomate in Behavioral Sleep Medicine provides secondary supervision and training. We also provide group case conferences and peer consultation.
Didactic Training
Weekly didactics covering neuroanatomy, neuropathology, test interpretation, ethics, diversity and multicultural competency, and professional development.
Scholarly Activity
Residents are expected to complete a scholarly project during the training year, such as a case study, literature review, or quality improvement initiative.
Supervision Training
Opportunities are available to supervise mid-level master's clinicians and practicum-level trainees, helping develop competency in the supervisory role.
Eligibility & Requirements
- Doctoral degree (Ph.D. or Psy.D.) in clinical or counseling psychology from an APA- or CPA-accredited program
- Completion of an APA- or CPA-accredited doctoral internship
- Demonstrated interest in neuropsychology through coursework, practica, and/or research
- Strong assessment background with experience administering and interpreting neuropsychological measures
- Commitment to evidence-based practice and professional development
- Eligible to obtain licensure as a psychologist in the state of Georgia
Credentialing Pathways
Training Toward Board Certification
Our residency is structured to prepare graduates for board certification in both clinical neuropsychology and behavioral sleep medicine. Residents leave the program with the supervised hours, documented competencies, and scholarly experience required to pursue credentialing through the relevant specialty boards.
American Board of Professional Neuropsychology & American Board of Clinical Neuropsychology
The residency fulfills the postdoctoral training requirements for board certification through the American Board of Professional Neuropsychology (ABN) and the American Board of Professional Psychology — American Board of Clinical Neuropsychology (ABPP/ABCN). Residents accumulate supervised hours in neuropsychological assessment, intervention, and consultation under a board-certified supervisor, and receive mentorship in preparing for the credentialing and examination process for either pathway.
- Supervised postdoctoral hours documented toward ABN and ABPP/ABCN requirements
- Direct mentorship from a supervisor board-certified through both ABN and ABPP/ABCN
- Guidance on credentialing and examination processes for both boards
- Case presentation and practice oral examination preparation
Board of Behavioral Sleep Medicine
Residents receive specialized training in behavioral sleep medicine that aligns with the eligibility requirements for the Board of Behavioral Sleep Medicine (BBSM) diplomate credential. Training includes CBT-I delivery, sleep disorder assessment, and clinical case supervision by a BBSM-certified supervisor.
- CBT-I and behavioral sleep medicine cases toward BBSM eligibility
- Supervision by a BBSM diplomate
- Training in assessment and treatment of insomnia, hypersomnia, and circadian disorders
- Support in documenting cases and hours for BBSM application
Stipend & Benefits
Residents receive a competitive annual stipend commensurate with postdoctoral training standards. Benefits include professional development funds for conference attendance and continuing education, and other support for EPPP preparation and licensure.
The program is a 24 month, full-time position. Start date is negotiable and can be arranged to align with the resident's internship completion.
